1850 REPUBLICA MEXICANA HAND FORGED RATTLESNAKE SHANK SPURS~CLOCK GEAR ROWELS
FINE & RARE ANTIQUE CUSTOM MADE 2 PIECE HAND FORGED & CHISELED IRON FOLK ART SPURS ~ SILVER INLAID & ENGRAVED RATTLESNAKE SHANKS, ROUND FILIGREED CLOCK GEAR ROWELS & HEEL BAND ENDS ~ REPUBLICA MEXICANA ~ CIRCA 1850
This is a Fine, Fancy Antique circa 1850 hand forged, custom made pair of hand chiseled Iron silver inlaid and engraved spurs with chiseled heel bands, snake shanks, clock gear rowels and buttons, with fine aged patina. You will see 100 pairs of spurs before you see one with the rare custom-made round rowel feature; and 1850 period round rowel silver inlaid and engraved clock gear spurs are extremely rare. The vast majority of this style spur are found as single spurs; and matched pairs are rare. These spurs are painstakingly hand forged and hand chiseled by an accomplished Artisan who created this intricately chiseled pair of silver inlaid and engraved silver Iron spurs such as this that show fine craftsmanship. Only a wealthy gentleman of means would have been able to commission such a fine pair of custom-made spurs. These spurs are completely handmade, using only the simplest of hand tools, i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand drilled & hand silver inlaid and engraved. Mid-1800s and prior spurs were primarily all Iron. The accomplished Maker used hand forging and simple hand tools such as hammers, chisels, files & drills to chisel Iron, make the cut outs in the rowels and heel bands, and inlay and engrave the silver decorations to create a masterpiece completely by hand. The inside measurement of the hand forged heel bands vary slightly at the open end is about 2 7/8" to 3” and will fit a Man's size boot. These spurs, measure about 6 1/8" long overall, with about 5/32" thick heel bands that are 3/4" tall and flat and weigh about 1pound 2.6 ounces. The outside spurs have silver inlaid and engraved heel band ends, snake shanks and round filigreed clock gear rowels. The heel band ends have been forged and flattened and are 1 1/8" long with that are enlarged to 1 1/4" tall, with a raised end bar that is hand chiseled in a diagonal pattern. Between this raised end bar and the end of the heel band is a stylized filigreed pattern with 4 cut outs and 4 silver inlaid and engraved leaves. The top bar secures the swinger with spur button, and the bottom bar has a roller that is used with a piece of leather used from one roller to the other that fits underneath the boot and cinches the spur to the boot.
The inside heel bands have the traditional diagonal striped pattern and show hand chiseling and alternating deep wide chiseling and thinner chiseling patterns but are all slightly uneven as they are hand done. The outside heel bands have a deeply chiseled stylized center panel created by hammering the background and creating random patterns. At first glance it appears the outside heel bands are chiseled Iron like the inside heel bands. However, there is a small sliver of shiny material on one outside heel band that may be solder or silver, but it's hard to tell. If so, the heel bands could have had a flat silver panel overlaid on the outside heel bands and the tiny random raised points could have been used to help anchor the silver if it was hammered into this panel. In silver overlay on bits and spurs when moisture gets between the silver and the iron, the iron rusts, swells, and separates from the silver; and was never an effective way to overlay silver. If this piece was overlaid and the panels were separated or damaged, they were undoubtedly removed by the owner as there is no way for the outside curved heel band to wear off. with the dark natural occurring even aged patina as they appear now; and any overlay was removed or lost at least a century ago.
The outside swinging buttons are about 11/16" in diameter hand forged Iron in a flower pattern with tiny, chiseled leaves and a silver inlaid center. The outside swinging buttons are identical without the silver inlay. All 4 Iron button swingers are identical, have rounded tops and unusual waisted form, with chisel marks on the base, matching aged patina to the spurs, and are original. The shanks are forged separately and then forged onto the heel band, creating the early 2-piece spur pattern. The shank shaft is clearly visible on the inside of the heel bands. The shanks are hand chiseled on all 4 sides and then transitions into the outside and inside filigreed coiled rattlesnake shape with a chiseled flower on both sides of the end of the shank with a center pin for the rowels. The rattle snakes on both sides are hand engraved, with the outside being silver inlaid and engraved. The outside rowel pin has a crown shaped finial, and the inside pin is peened. Round rowels are rare; especially when hand forged to only 3/32" thick, hand filigreed and hand chiseled in the very early clock gear style. The edge of the tines are parallel, which dates them as earliest pattern of clock gear tines. Being handmade, the rowel tines are about 2 3/4" across. Each rowel is filigreed with 16 individual cut outs, 8 outer cut outs and 8 inner cut outs that create 8 separate leaf patterns. The outside rowels have silver inlaid and engraved leaf patterns with round shaped concave silver inlaid circles between each leaf; all with fine attention to detail creating a thin circular Iron border with the outside square clock gear tines.
There are two different looks for these spurs allows the wearer to simply change the spur straps to have either side of the heel bands worn toward the outside; thus, having a fancy go to town pattern with silver inlaid and engraved, or engraved buttons, shanks, rowels, or a plain pattern. These spurs are complete with fine, double layered calf skin lined leather spur straps with hand embroidered pitiado (cactus fiber) in a leaf pattern with outside borders and nickel plated 1 piece steel buckles. It should be noted that early spurs typically had plain straps, but quickly wore out and were replaced several times over the decades with typically fancier straps. I took dozens of images in an effort to depict the spur details, but eBay now only allows 12 pictures. These fine hand chiseled round rowel spurs are in very good condition considering their extreme age. An 1850's spur is many times rarer than an 1870's spur as it had lived 20 years of hard use before an 1870 spur was made. And fancy spurs were handed down from generation to generation and typically worn until they fell apart. Overall, with normal wear over 1 2/3 centuries, with a natural dark aged patina that collectors love to see. Circa 1850. These fancy hand chiseled early Iron rare spurs come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way; and is a lost art in hand made spurs with only simple hand tools. These rare, chiseled iron silver inlaid and engraved snake shank clock gear spurs would fit into any mid-1800s Spur, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, Folk art, or Western Americana collection or display.
