"PETER RABBIT THE MAGICIAN" MECHANICAL BOOK
- (c) 1942 The Strathmore Co. by Mel Richards. 9" x 12" colorful hardbound die-cut cover with plastic spiral spine. 16 pages.
This highly graphic mechanical book is based on the popular Beatrix Potter character. A very novel & unique magic book featuring Peter Rabbit as a magician. Six tricks are included, all cleverly inter-placed on noted pages with die-cut inner pockets/folders.
Props include 3 admission tickets (4 more are hand-made), 5 portraits (including Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, Mrs. Rabbit & Peter), Macgregor's wallet & dollar, loaf of bread with knife, 2 phantom cards, Cottontail's fantastic folder, and 3 magic hat sections with rabbit/magician figures. Three "Box Office Programs", magic tricks envelope and "Magic Carpet" sheet is also included.
After examining contents, it appears one paper carrot ("Mystery Knife" trick) and an envelope with a fish ("Fantastic Folder" trick) are missing. Two of five box office programs, and two of five tickets are also missing. Magic wand and original box are not included.
Despite missing elements, this is a very eye-catching & unusual specialty item for the magic collector.
We consider the condition as GOOD to FAIR with miscellaneous surface/stain/edge wear. Misc. surface/corner creasing with scattered minor inner page tears (largest tear approx. 1/2"). Flap unceremoniously torn open on magic tricks envelope. Moderate penciling on two box office programs. Still well bound with no plastic spine cracks. Litho colors remain bold, bright and attractive.
Overall, we feel this scarce book is a very displayable and serviceable example by most standards (see photos). It would make a wonderful display for the discriminating VINTAGE MAGIC enthusiast. On a condition code scale of 1 to 10, the above listed item(s) rated - (7-6).
