1977 CB400F 22,333+ miles(mileage may increase slightly as it occasionally gets ridden)
This is the popular vintage bike - some low-mileage examples in excellent condition have brought easy five-figure auction prices… this, ummm… is not one of those examples. This 1977 F1 is simply a complete, solid example of an original CB400F. Take it home and just ride it, or use it as the starting point for a great restoration. The sound from those sexy four-into-one pipes is amazing, and the engine pulls evenly and strongly at the higher RPMs where it’s most comfortable. I haven’t owned the bike for very long; I got it in “it was running when I put it away a couple of years ago” condition, and put some time and effort into (A) getting the engine running, and (B) making it road-safe and road-legal.
I renewed a number of items - not as any kind of restoration, but just to get the bike on the road. Here’s a list of the parts and work:
Oil and oil filter change.
Oil pan dropped to clean the strainer, reinstalled with new oil pan gasket.
Complete valve adjustment.
The tank interior looked clean and rust-free, but because it’s difficult to see into the corners, I gave it a good clean and Evaporust treatment anyway - which, it turns out, wasn’t needed. The tank interior is in great condition.
New petcock and (non-Honda) fuel line installed.
Carbs removed and cleaned; new o-rings installed, but superior OEM brass was in good condition so was cleaned and re-used.
The rear fender was a rusty broken mess, so I sourced a used replacement, then cleaned and undercoated both front and rear fenders.
Front brakes: master cylinder and caliper both rebuilt with all new seals and pistons, including a new stainless steel caliper piston; brake fluid renewed.
New throttle cables, new clutch cable/ clutch cover gasket.
New front/rear tires and tubes.
Renewed fork oil (used ATF per OEM spec).
New chain/sprockets.
New ignition switch internals.
New starter relay.
New spark plugs.
New battery.
New air filter w/ retaining clip.
New TEC shocks.
New reproduction silencer - came slightly dented from supplier, but it was all that was available at the time.
Some damaged fasteners replaced - correct sizes, but non-OEM brand.
Center stand mounting/pivot, which can seize up over time, disassembled, cleaned and refurbished.
Swing-arm-mounted(why?!?) passenger foot pegs included (but not currently installed).
Original tool kit (complete except for pliers) and owners manual included.
And the issues:
There is a small oil leak - after a drip-free winter storage, since riding it this year a drip has formed beneath the engine front, one drop every couple of days.
One of the oil filter cover’s cooling fins has a broken corner.
The electric start button contacts are finicky, but it works. This is a known weak point, as the full headlight current passes through this switch, to be interrupted when starting.
There is a hesitation when pulling away from stop at low engine RPMs, but give it a little go and steps right up!
The headlight bucket has a repair.
The OEM four-into-one headers are solid, but have some scratched and scuffed spots.
One of the side covers is painted a close color match, but is missing its decal and clear coat.
The tank’s interior is great, but the exterior has minor paint, decal and dent issues (see photos).
One shock mount has been modified sometime in the past - it’s fully functional, but incorrect.
The OEM timing chain adjuster - a notorious weak point in this engine - is tired and not working as intended. An aftermarket manual adjustment bolt is currently installed.
A previous owner knackered the points adjustment screw heads a bit - they still work, but should be renewed.
The locking fuel filler cover is missing its rubber surround, and I haven’t been able to find a replacement.
The hand grips are non-OEM.

I've done my best to include everything in the description - if you have any questions, just ask!
Note on the "clean" title:
Maine does not require a title for motorcycles of this age. The bike had no title when I bought it, and it doesn't have one now - eBay didn't offer this as a choice, so I chose "clean" since that's the status of the bike. I'll provide a bill of sale if needed.
Sold as-is, with no warranty or returns. Local pickup, or buyer organizes shipping. I can assist to the extent of draining flammable fluids if required, and/or removing extraneous parts if necessary. Any other packing or crating will be the responsibility of the buyer.
Cash in hand for local pickup, Escrow.com otherwise, although I've never used it before, so it may be a learning experience. Buyer responsible for any payment fees.
