Absolute” is a favorite intensifier in British lad culture, used by the same U.K. bros who refer to their jokes and quotidian adventures as “banter.” It’s also used in a dry, ironic sense by people spoofing a certain subset of young, male Britain. “Absolute unit” is a superlative often applied to athletes and fighters that we in America might call “a savage” or “a beast.”
The first “absolute unit” meme was based on a photo of British hotelier David Morgan-Hewitt standing next to the Queen of England. Mr. Morgan-Hewitt was very large, indeed. Adam Koszary, programme manager for the UK’s Reading Museum and Museum of English Rural Life (@TheMERL), tweeted an old picture of a large ram with the caption: “Look at this absolute unit.” The tweet impressed Elon Musk, who hired Koszary to be Tesla’s social media manager.
In popular culture, an Absolute Unit is Someone or something that has the sheer mass or presence that makes your jaw drop and/or give the utmost respect to. A more scientific definition of absolute unit is “a unit the value of which is constant regardless of place or time and does not derive from nor depend on gravitation.”
Noah Johnson, a senior editor at GQ Style, declared absolute unit the “patron saint of menswear in 2018,” referring to an oversized clothing trend.
The term ‘absolute unit’ should not be confused with the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (U.N.I.T.).
