This is an Antique, hand forged, double mounted, silver inlaid & engraved pair of Vaquero / Charro spurs, with unusual cut out horseshoe heel bands and filigreed rowels. These spurs are completely handmade, using only the simplest of hand tools, i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand drilled & hand silver inlaid and hand silver engraved. It is very difficult to take images of a shiny object; and I took dozens of images in an effort to depict the finely detailed engraved silver inlays.
The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 3” and will fit a Man's sized boot. These spurs, measure about 4 7/8" long overall, with 15/16" tall heel bands. The outside and inside heel bands appear to be identical but do have differences in the pattern details. The
outside
heel bands have a horseshoe pattern with a cut out in the center, with silver inlaid and engraved raised diamond shapes with silver inlaid & engraved leaf patterns. The horseshoe has zig zag engraved borders top and bottom with 6 silver inlaid nail head decorations. The top is also raised with 2 silver inlaid & engraved decorations. The front and rear panels of the heel bands have scrolling silver inlaid leaf patterns with line engraving and a stippled background. The
inside
heel bands have a horseshoe pattern with a cut out in the center, with silver inlaid and engraved raised diamond shapes with silver inlaid with star pattern engraving. The horseshoe has zig zag engraved borders top and bottom with 6 silver inlaid nail head decorations. The top is also raised with silver inlaid & engraved decorations in a crosshatch pattern. The rear panels of the heel bands have scrolling silver inlaid leaf patterns with line engraving and a stippled background, identical to the outside heel band ends. However, the front panel is is similar but a different pattern of scrolling silver inlaid leaf patterns with line engraving and a stippled background. The engraver used line engraving, zig zag and stippled (textured) engraving for contrast in the decoration. This double pattern is much more work, and more costly; demonstrating this is a custom pair of spurs. This double silver mounting found on custom made spurs was expensive and allows the wearer to simply change the spur straps to have either side of the heel bands worn toward the outside in case one side became damaged; or, adding a different pair of fancy spur straps for a different look.
The outside buttons are hand forged, about 7/8" in diameter in a domed shaped leaf pattern, with 4 individual silver inlaid and engraved leaves. The inside buttons are hand forged, about 7/8" in diameter in a domed shaped flower pattern, with 4 individual silver inlaid and engraved leaves. All 4 Iron button swingers are original and identical, have matching aged patina to the spurs, as are all 4 silver inlaid & engraved buttons in 2 different paterns. Both the outside and inside shanks are silver inlaid and hand engraved and shaped in flower pattern with 4 petals. Both the inside and outside hand forged 6 Fleur de Lis` patterns of the rowels are silver inlaid and engraved, and resemble 6 patterns, each with 3 leaves. Being handmade, they vary slightly, and are about 1 1/2" in diameter, with a round ball shaped outside rowel pins and peened flat on the inside. All the silver inlays on these spurs are intact.
Note that the spurs show darkened areas that appear as patina; however, this dark brown color on the Iron spurs are remnants of an old cleaning process used decades ago using a cotton buffing wheel and jeweler’s rouge, a dark brownish paste, to buff the spurs. This could be cleaned if desired and/or the silver polished, but these have been left untouched, as in found condition. These spurs are an unusual pattern, and in good condition, with expected wear. Complete with hand embroidered spur straps stitched with pitiado cactus fiber from the Agave cactus; the same cactus that produces tequila. It should be noted the South of the border spur strap makers would often used mixed leather for the lining of spur straps, belts, etc., as they wouldn’t show when worn, and was a good way to utilize leather scraps from saddle making. These straps have a hand embroidered dark brown leather embroidered panel, a dark brown top leather strap, and a dark brown suede leather liner for both with nickel plated roller buckles. As expected, the original black material used to fill in the background of the embroidered design has shrunken and much has chipped away. The straps are sewn together by hand, which is typical on period antique straps; thus, the straps maybe all original, or a professional restoration of an old, embroidered strap.  Regardless, they are period and in the same condition, and complement the spurs.
This unusual silver inlaid and engraved pair of spurs come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way; and is a lost art in hand made spurs that is quickly becoming extinct. These double mounted spurs would fit into any spur collection, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, Reenactment, South of the Border, Folk art, or Western Americana display.
