Original TV SCRIPT for the Controversial HAWAII FIVE-O Episode "BORED, SHE HUNG HERSELF". Season 2 Episode 16. Written by Mel Goldberg. FIRST DRAFT dated September 22, 1969. A Leonard Freeman Production in association with CBS Television Network.
COPY of HOWARD SMITH, the Film Editor for this episode and many other episodes of Hawaii Five-O. His Original Hand SIGNATURE is at the top of the front cover. Interestingly, HOWARD SMITH'S Filmography on IMDB lists the episodes of Hawaii Five-O that he edited, but does not list this episode. Read on to see why.
A highly controversial episode that was broadcast only once, never to be seen again. As stated on the MetaCritic website: "This episode is not available for television syndication due to the controversial content. A viewer reportedly imitated the hanging 'exercise' and died."
The episode was, in effect, banned. Since its original broadcast on Jan. 7, 1970 it has not been rebroadcast by the network, it has never been included in the syndication packages sold to local stations or cable channels; and it has not been made available to viewers via home video or streaming. Even the HAWAII FIVE-O COMPLETE SERIES DVD COLLECTIONS do not contain the episode (they contain the following disclaimer: "Due to viewer reaction following the original telecast of the episode 'Bored, She Hung herself' (Season 2, episode 16), that episode has not been re-broadcast or released in any manner since its original airing and is not included in this collection.")
I guess even Howard Smith no longer wanted to be associated with the controversy!
Blue heavy stock paper covers, 3 hole punched, bound with 2 brass brads, 8.5x11 inches, 61 plain white photocopied pages printed on one side only (photocopying was, and often still is, how original copies of scripts were quickly produced and distributed to actors, producers, directors, editors and others involved in a production). The HAND SIGNATURE of HOWARD SMITH is ORIGINAL and UNIQUE to this copy (i.e. NOT photocopied).
VERY GOOD condition, the covers and inner pages have a crease to their upper corner and toning to their edges, otherwise the copy is bright and clear.
Nearly impossible to find (and I'm sure many would like it never to be found), but here it is, straight from the episode's editor.

******What is it about this one "Hawaii Five-0" episode, alone out of the series' run, that has kept it locked away? The plot featured Don Miles, a "health freak" (i.e., stock hippie character) who practiced what would now be identified as autoerotic asphyxiation (i.e., strangling or suffocating oneself to heighten sexual arousal and orgasm) but in the staid world of 1960s television was described as a form of "yoga" or "meditation." When Miles' girlfriend, Wanda Parker, is discovered dead after a violent argument with him, hanging from the same noose he employed for his "yoga," Parker's prominent psychiatrist father is insistent that Miles murdered her. (The real killer proves to be a neighbor, who strangled Wanda after she refused his advances.)******
And, in case you are wondering, NO, David Carradine did not portray the character Don Miles.
