A teaching session with Eugene Burger
This is a very good introduction to the world of bizarre ‘magick’. If you're looking for lots of tricks, don't buy this video. If you’re looking for a "flavour" of bizarre magic as seen through the eyes of America's Eugene Burger, then this is well worth buying. It's not hard core bizarre as such, but more an overview of bizarre magic, it’s evolution and how it's themes can connect with traditional magic performance.
Included are four performances, an interview, and a teaching session with Eugene Burger, which gives an excellent in-depth explanation of the Haunted Pack and some invaluable tips for performing the effect.
Introduction by Eugene
The video kicks off with an introduction about bizarre magic’s beginnings and it’s themes over the last 25 years. We learn of the early pioneers of the bizarre and weird magic movement - Edinburgh's Charles Cameron and Cornwall's Tony 'Doc' Shiels.
Afternoon with a Magician
In this segment, we visit Graceland cemetery in Chicago and Eugene reflects on his work as a magician. He tells the tale of symbols, talks philosophy and quotes on life and death - pretty heavy stuff but well in context. This part is almost like a mini-lecture with some interesting theories being put forward. The backing music/soundtrack adds nicely to the eeriness of this segment.
How to Make a Coin Disappear
Eugene shares his method for a coin vanish - this is very effective and can be used for most small objects.
Universal Thread
Performance of the burnt and restored thread. Here, Eugene uses the creation and destruction of the universe as the theme for this effect.
The Haunted Pack
Two separate performances by Eugene of the Haunted Pack. The first performance is seated, at a table in a "real-world" setting with guest Jan Orleans. A pack of bicycle cards is used with the selected card cutting itself from the pack. Unlike the standard haunted pack routine where the pack is placed in the palm of the hand, Eugene places the pack on the back of his hand to perform the effect.
The second performance is seated, on the floor with Jan in a mystical bizarre setting. Eugene and Jan both suitably attired in black kimonos.
A pack of Tarot cards is used this time. Much more mysterious. Again, the pack is placed on the back of Eugene's hand. Jan then places a tiny-lit candle and pewter candleholder in the shape of a hand onto the pack. A Tarot card cuts itself from the pack and the card's message is delivered to Jan.
Interview with Tony Andruzzi
Eugene interviews Tony Andruzzi in his home. Tony Andruzzi (now sadly deceased) specialized in bizarre magic through his "character", Masklyn ye Mage.
Formerly known as Tom Palmer, he was apparently a very accomplished comedy magician in the 50's and 60's who eventually "turned to the dark side" as they say, and very much led the U.S. bizarre magic scene in the 1970/80's through a series of "Invocational" conventions, books and magazines and also providing inspiration for Eugene Burger, David Parr and many others.
Tony offers his insights and opinions on what bizarre magic means to him.
The interview itself is at times playful and at times serious but valuable and very interesting nonetheless
A Book of Ghosts - Jay Inglee
Next, a performance of "A Book of Ghosts" by Jay Inglee. This is a creepy "séance" type effect and the story is weaved around an old book originally owned by Jay's now dead grandmother.
As in most good bizarre effects, props, story and performance feature strongly. You have it all here. The ancient book, small scrolls, a mini candle and candleholder, glass phial and shaking séance table. The spectator (Jan again) randomly selects a blank scroll and initials it. Then, from the old book, she randomly selects a page, then a single word on the page.
The spirits are now summoned by Jay and after some table shaking, a scroll magically rises from the phial of scrolls which, when opened is, Jan's initialed scroll with the chosen word from the book mysteriously written on it.
Note: The in-depth explanation of this effect is contained within Eugene Burger's "Strange Ceremonies" book - worth checking out.
Retribution
An excellent performance of a story by Eugene, which tells of a strange black envelope, he receives in the post one day. It contains pentagram signs on paper, five large tarot cards (Devil, hanged-man, death, judgment, the tower) and a parchment with handwritten instructions for a weird ritual. This is all very tongue in cheek but with a killer ending no doubt inspired by Tony Andruzzi.
A teaching session with Eugene Burger
The final segment gives an excellent in-depth explanation of the classic Haunted Pack that cuts itself. Eugene details various handling methods for this effect in both bizarre and real-world presentations. There are some invaluable tips here for performing this effect.
There is an almost theatrical quality to Eugene Burger's performances and the texture of his voice, which lend themselves perfectly to the atmosphere for presenting bizarre magic. For some bizarre (!?) reason, Eugene Burger reminds me of Actor/Director Sir Peter Ustinov - very interesting to listen to.
If you're being "drawn" towards bizarre magic as a way of presenting your magic, and you're looking for something which is a little unusual and offbeat, then look no further.
Real Secrets of Close-Up Magic
What are the real secrets of learning to perform magic? In this 70-minute video, Eugene Burger looks beyond tricks to explore the process by which we learn to perform magic. These Real Secrets are illustrated with sure-fire routines taken from Eugene's own professional performing repertoire.
You'll learn:
A terrific version of
Cutting the Aces
(in which the spectator finds the last ace by cutting the deck himself and spelling his own name!)
The
World's Fastest Card Trick
(Eugene's favorite!)
The full work on
Making Cigarettes Disappear
(two different methods, for every performance condition!)
An
Old Carnival Game
(Eugene's version of the classic glass under the napkin.)
The
Three Coin Mystery
(a surprising vanish and a delightful example of commercial close-up routining!)
And a special bonus: Eugene discusses Al Baker's
Impossible Card Force
(one of the most deceptive forces of all time.)
Here's your opportunity to learn the Real Secrets of great magic - and to experience a teacher who will stimulate you to think about your magic in new and creative ways.
