FINE & RARE SILVER MOUNTED HAND FORGED & FILIGREED ANTIQUE LADIES SPURS ~ 1870's
FINE & RARE SILVER MOUNTED HAND FORGED & FILIGREED ANTIQUE LADIES SPURS ~ 1870's
FINE & RARE ANTIQUE CALIFORNIA TRANSITIONAL
HAND FORGED ~ HAND CHISELED ~ DOUBLE MOUNTED SILVER INLAID
LADIES IRON SPURS ~ EARLY BIRDS HEAD SHANKS ~ THIN ROUND FILIGREED
TEAR DROP ROWELS ~ EARLY BAT WING TOOLED STRAPS
    MAKER MARKED ~ CIRCA 1870's
This is a fine, Antique, hand forged pair Ladies Iron spurs with chiseled heel bands, shanks and cut out rowels, with fine detail & craftsmanship. You will see 100 pairs of spurs before you see one with the rare custom-made round rowel feature; and 1800's round rowel spurs are much rarer; especially in ladies spurs. These spurs are painstakingly hand forged and hand chiseled by an accomplished Artisan who created this fine quality, intricately chiseled pair of Iron spurs that show fine craftsmanship. These rare Ladies spurs are decidedly smaller proportioned and appear delicate, as designed for a horsewoman with both Mexican / California transitional characteristics. They are completely handmade, using only the simplest of hand tools, i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand filigreed & hand silver engraved; thus, the measurements vary slightly.
The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 2 13/16” – 2 7/8”. Note that typically a full-sized Mans spur begin at about 3” +. These smaller spurs measure only about 4 13/16" – 4 3/4” long overall, with about 1/4" thick heel bands that are 1/2" tall, and the pair weighs 11.6 ounces or 331 grams. The outside and inside heel bands have the early rope pattern decoration. Both spurs are Maker marked on the inside heel band where the shank is forged into the heel band. The mark is the initials M. / Z.  Maker marked early spurs are extremely rare, and I can not find any information on these initials. Note both inside heel bands are hand painted with the large stylized number 515; probably a museum inventory number.
The 4 heel band ends have been forged and flattened with stylized ends with two cut outs to accommodate the 4 early small round Iron barrel rollers at the bottom for leather straps around the bottom of the boot heel, and a top cut out for the 4 rotating stylized iron swingers. All 4 Iron buttons & swingers are original. The swingers attach to the early style small round Iron 2 mushroom flower pattern line engraved buttons, and 2 plain Iron buttons. The outside and inside heel bands are deeply chiseled in a slanting pattern that creates a raised diagonal ridge with a thin border and a central panel that is hand chiseled and inlaid with silver stripes; creating the early and traditional rope pattern. The inside and outside heel band ends are silver inlaid with line engraving at the top, a chiseled engraved bar below, and a 3-leaf pattern below with chiseled edges and deep dark aging on the bottom leaves. Note the barrels have a line engraving and the swinger bottoms also have line chiseling. Note It is a separate skill set to deeply hand chisel, filigree, and silver inlay spurs. The engraver purposely used chiseled line engraving decoration on the shank tops and heel band ends for eye appeal and contrast. This
    double silver mounted
allows the wearer to change the spur straps to have either side of the heel bands worn toward the outside if one side becomes damaged or they want a slightly different spur look with different rowel pins with a different style of spur straps. Both the outside and inside shanks are shaped in an early stylized bird’s head pattern. The shanks are lightly hand chiseled on the top edges. The shank sides are deeply chiseled on both the inside and outside, creating a median center ridge. The inside and outside shanks have silver overlaid borders with engraved accents. Round rowels are rare; especially when only 1/8" thick, filigreed and hand chiseled in a stylized variation of the early clock gear rowel style. Being handmade, the rowel tines are about 1 5/8" across and about 1/8" thick. The rowels are hand forged with 16 individual, delicately filigreed tear drop shape cut outs that resemble the petals of a flower: all with fine attention to detail and a thin circular border. The outside rowel pins have a large silver acorn shaped finial, and the inside pins are peened flat. These spurs are complete with original, period, early style bat wing tooled leather spur straps with no buckles or straps; just slanted small holes for the early style small buttons. It appears at one time the straps were lined in suede leather to reinforce and preserve the outer layer of leather.
These finely detailed, double hand chiseled round rowel spurs are in fine + condition overall, especially for their extreme age; with light wear and even, dark naturally occurring aged patina to the Iron that collectors love to see. Circa 1870's. Note that the early California style spurs were made by Mexicano Craftsmen on both sides of the border in California and Mexico during the transitional period of the late 1800’s when the California style spurs came into style for American Cowboys in the Old West, especially in the border states.
This hand forged, hand chiseled & silver inlaid early Transitional Ladies  pair of Iron spurs would fit into any Spur, Ladies spur, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, Folk art, or Western Americana collection or display.

eBay customers are protected when they are an eligible buyer, complete a purchase of an eligible item on a eBay's website, and purchase the item on eBay by using the "Pay Now" option, third-party checkout or an eBay invoice in one lump payment with a PayPal approved financial business. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. Improper good faith conduct can include, but is not limited to, any means by which a buyer can attempt to unjustly benefit from the Seller's Terms & conditions or eBay's Buyer Protection plan. Moreover, good faith conduct does not include buyer's remorse, regardless of the reason. Returns will not be accepted such as changed my mind, found a better price, just didn't like it, Ordered by mistake, Arrived too late, etc. Returns will not be accepted and buyers will be reported to eBay when buyer makes

claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller.
