CONDITION. Hazel Atlas created this gorgeous dazzling deep Cobalt Blue color around 1935, and then started making all of its most famous cobalt blue colored Patterns then until the early 1940s, including the following: Moderntone, Criss-Cross Kitchenware, Newport, Aurora, Sportsman "Ships", Royal Lace, Chevron, Fine Rib, Shirley Temples, etc. This would make this colored glassware somewhere between 80 to 86 years old. The pitcher No. 1876 is made from a 2-part mold, but the tumblers No.1709 are mold blown and both are found on the top of page 123 of Hazel Marie Weatherman's Colored Glassware of the Depression Glass Era 2 published in 1974. The pitcher measures about 8 inches high at its ice lip, about 5 inches across the top opening and sits on a 4 inch diameter base. It has the famous "HA" logo on its bottom, with can be seen in the 4th photograph. There is one curve "straw mark" in the inside bottom of the pitcher, which is NOT a defect or break; these pieces were all machine made, and has many imperfections such as mold roughness and various straw marks, which I believe adds to its beauty and uniqueness of each piece. The handle, ice lip, and spout are absolutely perfect, with no chips anywhere, and there are only the slightest scratches on its bottom. There are 3 sizes of tumblers: the 3 largest tumblers are 5 inches tall, with a 2 5/8 top opening and sits on a 2 inch diameter round base. The 3 medium tumblers are 4 1/8 inches tall, with a 2 3/4 top opening and also sits on a 2 inch diameter round base. The 5 smallest tumblers measure 3 inches tall with a 2 1/4 inch top opening and sits in a 1 3/4 inch diameter round base. None of the tumblers are marked but all match exactly to the pitcher, as shown in the Weatherman book.
I only wish I had more, because they are all so gorgeous. When used on a dining room table for entertainment, this pitcher with its matching tumblers must have looked really awesome on the table.
They are all absolutely beautiful, and were purchased from an old estate sale on Long Island. Although they were pre-owned, they are all in absolutely perfect condition, except for some very tiny scratches only on the bottom of the pitcher as the tumblers have absolutely no scratches on any of them, as seen in the photographs, which is amazing, considering their age, and be assured that there are no reproductions of this pattern; these are all originals. I found them all just sitting inside a closed dining room cabinet where they must have sat on a shelf for many years and were kept safe, because of the lack of scratches on their bottoms, where they would be expected to be found from glassware this old. The children running the estate sale told me that they were never allowed to use these glasses because they came from their grandmothers home and were very special to their parents. I have been collecting unusual vintage objects for many years, and always try to describe the items as best as I can. Except for the scratches already mentioned on the bottom of the pitcher, I don't see any other scratches, or chips, fleabites, cracks, stains, cloudiness, or repairs anywhere on the bowl. They come from a smoke-free home. I only accept PayPal, and never charge extra for packaging and handling. Shipping and Insurance sent via USPS Priority
