This is a Fine, Fancy, Antique, hand forged, custom made, double mounted silver inlaid & engraved spurs with horseshoe pattern rowels, heel bands, and buttons, with fine detail & craftsmanship.
This pair of double silver inlaid, and engraved patterns is much more work, and more costly; demonstrating this is a custom pair of spurs.
These spurs have dozens of hand chiseled inlays; then, meticulously inlaid with silver & hand engraved. Almost every piece of metal on these spurs are silver inlaid and engraved and shows attention to detail on this fine pair of custom-made spurs. They are completely handmade, using only the simplest of hand tools, i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand drilled & hand silver inlaid, and hand silver engraved. The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 3 -3 1/16", a man’s size spur. Note the inside of the heel bands have lots of the original charcoal bluing, demonstrating that the spurs have very light wear from actual use.
These spurs, measure about 5 1/4" long overall, with 7/8" wide heel bands that are 1/4" thick and domed on the outside curvature. These spurs weigh 1 pounds 5.9 ounces, or 622 grams.
This pair of spurs is double mounted, i.e., both the outside and inside heel bands are silver inlaid and engraved with different patterns, allowing the owner to change the spur straps, or use a different pair of straps to obtain a different look from the same pair of spurs. Normally, this type of spur would have the inside heel bands inlaid in the traditional diagonal striped pattern. However, this pair has the very unusual characteristic of different patterns on both of the outside heel band center panels on the spurs, as well as different patterns in the center panels of the inside heel bands. I have never seen this feature before on a pair of spurs. Both outside and inside heel bands have silver inlaid borders with zig zag engraved decoration; but all 4 heel band panels are different.
The left spur has an outside center panel with 3 silver inlaid & engraved horseshoe patterns with 3-dimensional raised hoof nail slots with a stippled backgrounds and line engraved center heart panels with 7 silver inlaid and line engraved leaf and flowers patterns between the horseshoes. The right spur has an outside center panel with 1 center silver inlaid & engraved horseshoe patterns with 3-dimensional raised hoof nail slots with a stippled background and line engraved center heart panels, with 11 silver inlaid and line engraved leaf and flowers patterns on both sides of the horseshoe.
The left spur has an inside center panel has 7 silver inlaid patterns of leaves and flowers with line, punch dot and stippled (textured) engraving. The right spur has an inside center panel has 9 silver inlaid patterns of leaves and flowers with line, punch dot and stippled engraving. All 4 swingers and silver inlaid horseshoe buttons are original. The buttons are a horseshoe pattern, en suite, with 4 silver inlays with zig zag and punch dot decoration. The engraver purposely used punch dot, stippled, line and zig zag engraving for eye appeal and contrast to reflect light and show the extremely inlaid and engraving details.
Both the outside and inside shanks are silver inlaid and engraved, and shaped in a typical figure 8 pattern. Both sides are identical with punch dot and zig zag engraving. Both the tops and bottoms of the shanks are zig zag engraved.
Round style rowels are rare; especially when double silver ornately inlaid and engraved with figural patterns such as the horseshoe on the outside, en suite with the heel bands and buttons; and a different pattern on the inside.
The outside hand forged 6 spoke (tines) rowels are zig zag engraved, and the center panels are embellished with 6 silver inlaid horseshoes with stippled backgrounds, leaving the slots of the horseshoe slightly raised. The centers of the 6 horseshoes have a heart shape with punch dot and zig zag engraving. The inside rowels are segmented like a 6-petal clover, with each petal having a zig zag engraved border and punch dot center decoration. Being handmade, the rowel tines vary slightly, and are about 2 1/4" across x 3/16” thick. The outside rowel pins have a bullet shape, and the inside pins are peened in a dome shape.
Note that much of the orginal charcoal bluing remains on the rowels, and especially the tines, which is the first thing to go on spurs. This demonstrates, as does the inside bluing of the heel bands, that these spurs have seen very little use.
These spurs are complete with fine, fancy, suede leather lined original period tan calfskin leather spur straps with 3 dimensional chumitiado (caterpillar) hand embroidering in 3 color wool tuffs, including the traditional red and black colors, with nickel-plated roller buckles. The red, white and black wool decoration is called chumitiado, which is caterpillar in Spanish. Of the dozens and dozens of silver inlays on these quality spurs, all of the silver intact; and I only found 2 minuscule pin prick spots of missing silver. It is extremely difficult to take images of a shiny object; and I took dozens of images in an effort to depict the finely detailed engraved silver inlays. These finely detailed, double mounted round rowel spurs are in excellent condition overall, with very light wear; and an even, light aged patina with lots of original charcoal bluing that collectors love to see. These minty, fancy, finely inlaid and engraved spurs come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way; and is a lost art in hand made spurs that is quickly becoming extinct. These flashy, double mounted unusual 4 pattern spurs would fit into any Spur, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, Reenactment, South of the Border, Folk art, or Western Americana collection or display.
